On 3 April 2016, Kasetsart University Raptor Rehabilitation Unit and Thailand Department of National Parks and Wildlife released 2 Himalayan Vultures at Thai-Myanmar border in Chiang mai province. The site is on migration route of the species which 10-30 birds pass through every winter since 2007.
The vultures are metal banded on right tarsus and aged as second CY. Our previous genetic and satellite-tagging studies on released vultures since the first release in 2007 suggest that they may have originated from the Himalayas.
If any of you happen to visit or suvey in the Himalayas or western China and encounter banded himalayan vultures please kindly report sightings (date, location, behavior or band number if carcass found) of the banded vultures to raptor@BirdsofThailand.org.
